CANBERRA LOCAL ALEX MCKENZIE INKS A-LEAGUES DEAL

Canberra United are delighted to announce the signing of locally born Alex McKenzie ahead of the 2023/24 Liberty A-League season.

The defender, who played her formative years in the National Capital, has returned to Canberra to begin her career in the elite competition having been impressing for the Illawarra Stingrays in the New South Wales National Premier League.

“I am so grateful to have received an opportunity to sign for my hometown club, Canberra United,” McKenzie commented.

Preseason is underway and the hard work has certainly begun, being a part of a team with such a renowned support and fan base makes home games at McKellar super special and I am looking forward to any opportunity to experience the atmosphere first-hand.

“Having grown up in Canberra, my family and I are all Canberra United supporters and I’m certain my friends and interstate family will be swung to the green team!

“I wish to thank Njegosh (Popovich) and the Canberra United coaching staff for seeing potential in me as an athlete and a footballer. I feel so fortunate to be in a team with numerous experienced and quality players who I can learn from and play/train alongside”.

McKenzie began her footballing journey as a youngster at Woden Valley, enjoying a spell at the Canberra United Academy, before playing football in the NPL with the West Canberra Wanderers boys.

Latterly, she played for the Wanderers Women’s program before making the switch to play with the under-18 boys at the same club.

“Alex is another youngster who has impressed me with her ability, dedication, and skills,” Canberra United Head Coach Njegosh Popovich explained.

“As a local Canberra product, Alex understands the environment, the club, and what the team means to the people of this city. She has hit the ground running in terms of her development and is pushing hard in training.

“We are excited by the potential that Alex had as a player and are sure that she will be able to continue to learn, to develop as a player, and, like all of our squad, to be an important part of the forthcoming season.”
