Canberra United defender Sasha Grove will leave the club for pastures new ahead of the 2024/25 Liberty A-League season, bringing down the curtain on a career that has exclusively been played in the National Capital.
Grove, a product of the Canberra United Academy where she excelled as a forward scoring 21 goals in 47 matches, switched to a wide defensive role when promoted to the first team where she quickly became a firm fans favourite.
The amiable defender’s United career statistics saw her play forty-seven matches for the team in green, netting one goal, the third in a 3-0 win over Western Sydney Wanderers at McKellar Park in February 2023.
“Sasha has been a loyal player for Canberra United since she made her breakthrough being promoted from the Academy structure,” Canberra United CEO, Samantha Farrow commented.
“Sasha always gave committed performances for the team and was a popular member of the Canberra United playing group both within, and outside, of the organisation. We wish her the best of luck in her future career.”
Grove made her Canberra United debut on 3 January 2021, in Season 13, the Round 2 victory over Melbourne City in front of 1,398 at Viking Park in Canberra, United winning courtesy of a stoppage time goal from Michelle Heyman.
“Having the opportunity to start my professional career in my hometown has been the greatest privilege,” Grove said.
“Playing for Canberra United has instilled in me the drive to compete and continually grow both on and off the field. Thank you to Canberra United for trusting me in my time at the club, but now it is time for me to take my journey someplace new.
“I only hope to have continued Canberra United’s legacy of inspiring and empowering young footballers to dream big, play hard, and continue to grow the game during my time in the Capital.
“The success of Canberra United is a testament to the passion of its supporters, so I would like to extend a huge thank you to every Canberra United supporter, staff member, and all my teammates for backing me every step of the way.”
Canberra United FC thanks Sasha for her four years at the club and extend our best wishes for a successful and prosperous career.
