Canberra United are delighted to announce the signing of former Young Matilda Nickoletta Flannery for the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 Liberty A-League seasons.
Flannery has put pen to paper on a two-year deal to bring her back to the club where she made 49 appearances and scored 9 goals, having missed the entirety of the last campaign after sustaining a ruptured ACL at a Matildas ID camp in May last year.
“I am incredibly grateful to have signed with Canberra United for the upcoming season,” Flannery said. “I am really looking forward to representing my hometown club again and am thrilled to be a part of what is shaping up to be a successful team in green this season.
“This is such an exciting time to be back at the club. I am very grateful for Njegosh, who has granted my return to the club after being out for a season with injury. He has already put in place some exciting plans and targets for the season, and I can’t wait to do what I can to assist him in achieving those plans and make him proud!
“There is nothing more exhilarating than running out in front of our home crowd and loyal fanbase. The sense of community at the club is second to none. The fans at Canberra United are the people we play for when we step onto the field, and who keep us motivated up until the dying moments.”
Flannery made her Liberty A-League debut back in 2015/16, spending the first of her four seasons in the competition, then known as the Westfield W-League, with Canberra United before having a season in Northern NSW with the Newcastle Jets.
Ironically, her first goal in the competition came for United against the Jets in the 92nd minute of a 5-2 win over the Jets at McKellar Park on 26th November 2016, the first of four she netted in thirteen appearances that campaign.
“Nicki is a great addition to our squad both in terms of her quality on the pitch and what she brings off it as well,” United Head Coach Njegosh Popovich commented.
“She is well known to the Canberra United fanbase for her style of play, her positive attitude towards playing the game and the pace and finishing power she can bring to the final third. I have no doubt that she will prove to be an important addition to our squad for the new season.”
