Former Canberra United Goalkeeper Melissa Maizels will ‘return home’ for Season 11, as she gets set to don the Canberra United green in 2018/19.
Maizels made four appearances for United across seasons seven and eight of the Westfield W-League but says she has unfinished business in Canberra and is looking forward to returning.
“I cannot wait to be back,” Maizels said.
“It has been two years since I was in Canberra and it feels like I’m coming home.”
“My career started in Canberra, I was there as a second-choice keeper and I feel like I have some unfinished business.”
“I want to come and play for the club as the number one.”
Head Coach Heather Garriock was full of praise for Maizels and said she was looking forward to working with the 25-year old this season.
“To have Melissa returning to Canberra is great for the team and the club as a whole,” Garriock said.
“When she was here last time she obviously was behind Lydia, but now I am very excited to have her ready to for this season.
“She has aspirations to play for the Matildas and that’s what I love in a player, someone who sets themselves challenges and a long-term goal.”
Maizels headed to Peth after her stint in Canberra and said she is thankful to Canberra for giving her a professional opportunity.
“I feel like Canberra was where my professional football career really did start,” she said.
“I’m very grateful to the club and the fans for giving me my first opportunity and I can’t wait to come home this season.”
“The fans are what I miss most about Canberra, so I’m looking forward to showing them everything I’ve learnt and the player I’ve become since they showed belief in me back then. I’m looking forward to giving back to the club and the fans.
Maizels is currently based with NPLW Victoria outfit Bayside United and will arrive in Canberra following the end of the local season.
She joins fellow recent signings Nikola Orgill, Tash Prior, Taren King, Refiloe Jane and Rhoda Mulaudzi in the Canberra United squad for Season 11.
