United will relish return to McKellar, says Garriock

Canberra United head coach Heather Garriock believes a return home to McKellar Park will be just what her side needs after two consecutive losses in the Westfield W-League.

United lost 2-0 to Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium on Thursday night following a one-goal defeat in Newcastle last week and they face Sydney FC next Sunday back in Canberra.

Garriock admitted that her side struggled to break down a disciplined Adelaide side on Thursday night in a performance that has become a little bit of a trend against sides happy to sit back.

“We are struggling to break down blocks,” she said.

“Possession based teams are better to play against from our perspective because they leave gaps and they move forward confidently.

“Adelaide this week and Newcastle last week played as a solid block and we are finding it difficult to break that down.

“It comes down to us needing to be patient, and tonight we weren’t patient,” she said on Thursday.

Garriock also lamented a lack of patience against the Lady Reds, with Canberra unable to find many openings across the 90 minutes.

“Adelaide deserved the win. We gave them a bit too much respect especially in the first half, and they’re a very disciplined and well-structured team and they wanted the three points more than us tonight.”

Attention now turns to Sydney FC at McKellar Park on Sunday, 2nd December and Garriock believes it is just what the team needs.

“I know that it will really help us, playing at home next weekend,” she said.

That is one of the main parts of next game, playing at McKellar Park we need that lift that the crowd gives us.”

“Sydney are a good team and they have plenty of great individuals.”

“But as you can see from Adelaide tonight, you don’t just need great individuals to win games, and that’s where we need to play and gel together better as a team.”
