Canberra United have bounced back from consecutive five goal defeats by defeating Newcastle Jets three-nil away at No.2 Sportsground.
Canberra started brightly with Vesna Milivojevic and Michelle Heyman linking up well, as they have done all season, to cause problems early on for the Newcastle defence.
First real shot of the game came just under ten minutes in as Nickoletta Flannery sent an effort towards the Newcastle goal, with Georgina Worth saving comfortably.
Not long after and the home side went on the attack as Lucy Johnson tried her luck off a deflection but it was not enough to trouble Chloe Lincoln.
Newcastle had an incredible opportunity to go in front little over 15 minutes in as Lauren Allan got in behind the defence only to be denied by Lincoln, with Ashlee Brodigan’s follow up effort denied on the line by Ellie Brush.
Despite the Jets having arguably the best chance of the match in the opening half an hour, Canberra often found themselves on the front foot as Flannery used her pace to advantage down the left.
Milivojevic continued her strong start to the game, as the Serbian International got on the end of a Grace Jale pass, and sent a stinging shot towards goal with Worth forcing it out for a save.
There was little more action in the half as both sides headed into the break with the scores level.
Canberra got off to a bright start in the second half as Milivojevic again went first time and forced another quality save from Worth early on.
Much of the opening stages of the second half went Canberra’s way, and it paid off massively in a seven minute span.
Laura Hughes got the ball rolling, as the midfield curled the ball sweetly into the top corner to open the scoring. Heyman followed two minutes later as the legendary forward got on the end of a horror back pass to poke the ball home and double Canberra’s lead inside two minutes.
Only five minutes later and Canberra had a third as Hughes was brought down in the box, with Grace Maher stepping up to calmly convert.
Despite Newcastle having a handful of shots on goal in the closing stages, they would not be enough as Canberra comfortably saw out the game, going on to claim a three goal win.
