REVIEW: UNITED CRUISE INTO FINALS WITH THREE STRAIGHT WINS

Canberra United will head into finals with three straight wins under the belt, winning three goals to one away to Western Sydney Wanderers.

One change was made to the side that beat Wellington Phoenix in Round 22, with Alex McKenzie into the starting side for Maja Markovski.

The hosts started strong with a handful of early chances that were comfortably dealt with by Sally James.

United were denied an opener six into minutes in after some brilliant build up play. Midfielder Mary Stanic-Floody sent the ball out wide for Aideen Keane to run on to, with the speedy forward laying off to Michelle Heyman, who would see her first-time effort palmed away by Wanderers ‘keeper Aimee Hall.

While the Wanderers enjoyed the majority of possession, United had the better chances, and would take the lead in the 25th minute.

With two successive corners in a short span of time, a perfectly struck ball from Emma Robers found Darcey Malone, with the midfielder heading the ball home to give Canberra the lead, and her second goal of the season.

United came out firing in the second half, doubling their lead within five minutes of play resuming.

Standing over a free-kick, Bethany Gordon could not have struck the ball any better, leaving the Wanderers ‘keeper absolutely no chance of saving it.

Wanderers reduced the deficit just past the hour mark, as substitute Bronte Trew found the back of the net to set up an enthralling finish to the match.

It took United just under 15 minutes to put the lead back out to two goals. Charging up the right, Aideen Keane gave Ruby Nathan a perfectly placed ball, with the New Zealand international unmarked at the back post to score her first A-Leagues goal.

Canberra wasn’t content with only three, as substitutes Jynaya Dos Santos and Holly Murray both tried their luck from range.

United were able to close out the game comfortably, and head into the finals series with three straight wins.
