Canberra out to topple high-flying City

United face Melbourne City in a massive WWL fixture in Gosford this weekend.

Westfield W-League Champions Canberra United have set their sights on downing high-flying table-toppers Melbourne City when the pair meet at Central Coast Stadium in Gosford on Sunday afternoon in front of the live Fox Sports cameras. The two squads are jam-packed with talent and should provide a quality match as United play a home match away from Canberra for the first time.

Central Coast Stadium will be the fifth venue Canberra has utilised for a home fixture after using McKellar Park, Deakin Stadium, Bruce Stadium and Viking Park and will provide the back-drop for a clash between two teams with realistic aims of ending the season with the coveted silverware.

Melbourne City have enjoyed their start to life as a Westfield W-League entity racking a trio of wins to kick-start their season and plundering goals on an average of four per game after three rounds. Larissa Crummer leads the scoring charts with four goals to her name already and is ably supported by Marianna Tabain (three goals) and Lisa De Vanna (two goals). Their last outing was a convincing 4-0 away success over last season’s League Champions Perth Glory.

Canberra meanwhile shook off the disappointment of an opening day loss to Brisbane Roar to down Sydney FC in their last fixture with goals from Nicole Begg, Veronica Perez and Caitlin Munoz securing the three points. Having the bye last week meant United slipped down the ladder due to their inactivity and Head Coach Rae Dower will be keen to get the team back out on the paddock and continue their top four push.

United welcomes back Lydia Williams and Michelle Heyman from international duty with the Matildas in China and with the rest of the squad fit and raring to go, Dower has a nice selection dilemma ahead of the all-important match. City meanwhile should be at full strength for the encounter as well meaning that the watching crowd, at the venue or via the live coverage on Fox Sports and ABC TV, should be in for a treat.

Canberra United Members can access a free ticket to the match by presenting their Membership Card at the Western Gate ticket office at Central Coast Stadium. For those unable to travel the Tradies will be showing the match on its big screen and we encourage all United fans who aren’t attending Gosford to gather at the Tradies for the big occasion.
