Match Preview – Newcastle Jets v Canberra United

Canberra United is back on the road this weekend, to take on the Newcastle Jets in Round 9 of the Liberty A-Leagues.

Energy has been high within the Canberra United camp this week, after the team completed seven days of isolation and was able to return to training.

United midfielder Laura Hughes told media the squad has been laser focused on the task at hand.

“During isolation our loads dropped, so this week has just been about building it back up so we don’t have any injuries,” Laura Hughes told media.

“Our preparation is good and we’ve tried really hard and we’re working on all the finer details so it can be frustrating when it doesn’t come off in the final game. We’ve been unlucky in some of the games to not get some goals and we’ve deserved a bit more out of some of the games but we’ve got to keep moving forward.

“I think this season, we’ve struggled to manage games and keep possession of the ball, it’s been really transitional so just working on that sort of stuff and a lot of finishing on goal because we want to score more goals”.

Both Canberra and Newcastle missed out on a game last weekend due to COVID-19 protocols so will be keen to restart with a strong statement.

Canberra has the stats on their side against the Jets though, winning 14 of their past 19 encounters. However Newcastle hasn’t dropped a game in the past four rounds while Canberra is still searching for their first win.

“Newcastle is a real fighting team, you can’t take them lightly,” Laura said.

“From the first minute to the last minute they’ll push us hard, they’re a strong physical team so it’s just about us being able to match that physicality and being able to play through their lines and the get the finishing touches on goal.”
