Reigning W-League champion Canberra United meets competition newcomer Western Sydney Wanderers FC in round four of the Westfield W-League at Campbelltown Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with kick off scheduled for 2pm.
The match-up is sure to be an intriguing battle and it looms as somewhat of a David and Goliath-like battle, albeit few would predict Sunday-s match to end similarly to that historic story.
United, a staple of the W-League, will enter the fixture as an unbackable favourite to collect all three competition points after exhibiting some scintillating early-season form in its first three outings of the 2012-13 season.
After a solid showing in the opening-round nil-all draw with Brisbane Roar, Canberra was relentless in its meeting with Newcastle Jets, dismantling the inferior NSW outfit to record a 5-0 victory and keep an excellent away from home record intact. Its round three encounter against Adelaide United at McKellar Park last week was much the same, with United piling on three late goals to seal a convincing 3-1 victory and stretch its unbeaten run, dating back to last season, to 15 games.
Canberra-s commanding form has seen it earn seven competition points from a possible nine after three rounds of action. Its attacking football has been the pinnacle of the competition and has produced a total of eight goals, all of which have been scored by different players, while the Ellie Brush-led defensive line has been resolute, only allowing the opposition to find the back of the net once.
Jitka Klimkova-s women now sit comfortably atop the Westfield W-League ladder and, just as they were throughout the 2011-12 season, are fast becoming a feared force once more.
United-s Western Sydney opposition will enter the round four meeting brimming with confidence after the club secured its maiden W-League victory last weekend. That accomplishment arrived courtesy of a shock 2-0 victory over a previously undefeated Perth Glory outfit and elevated the competition-s new girls into fourth place on the league ladder.
It was a mandatory victory for the Wanderers. 4-3 and 2-1 defeats in round one and two against Adelaide and Sydney respectively had dampened the spirits of the newly-inducted side into Australian football-s elite class for women.
But few would predict the Wanderers- celebrations to extend into a second week, with Canberra rarely gifting its opposition an easy route to victory, especially with the momentum currently behind it.
