Canberra’s Jennifer Bisset is looking forward to lining up against one of her role models when Canberra United takes on the Newcastle Jets on Saturday in the Westfield W-League semi final at Energy Australia Stadium.
Canberra-s Jennifer Bisset is looking forward to lining up against one of her role models when Canberra United takes on the Newcastle Jets on Saturday in the Westfield W-League semi final at Energy Australia Stadium.
The attacking midfielder was born in Newcastle but doesn-t remember too much of her time in the Hunter before moving to Canberra except for her encounter with the former Matilda and current Newcastle Jets captain.
“I don-t remember much from back then; I was only seven at the time,” said the shy Bisset.
“I remember when I was little, I can-t remember who was playing, but Cheryl Salisbury was there and I got her autograph so maybe I can get it again this weekend.”
Despite six Canberra United appearances to her name, Bisset, is ruling out the possibility of Salisbury wanting her autograph in return… for now.
“I doubt it but that would be nice if she did,” laughed the 16 year old.
While in Newcastle, Bisset lived five minutes down the road from the semi final venue and is hoping that the rest of her family who still remains in the city will come and show their support.
“I hope so, they said they were coming.”
The league itself and the perks that follow is not lost on Bisset who joined Canberra United as a late signing for Robbie Hooker and his squad before making her debut against the Melbourne Victory in Round Four.
“I-m just really happy not to be left out…and to play is a bonus,” Bisset said.
“I-m really happy to just be a part of the squad because there-s such a great atmosphere and everyone is really nice.”
“Playing in the semi final is going to be big, even to just get my name on the team sheet would be really exciting.”
“I just liked being on the bench because it-s closer to the game and you get free Powerades and stuff.”
“I wasn-t really that nervous, it was just nice having all that adrenaline pumping and then having so much energy from it,” Bisset said reminiscing on her first appearance for Canberra United.
“I thought about it afterwards that I should have been nervous but I wasn-t and I haven-t been since.”
With less than a week until the semi final, Bisset believes her side is training well and is prepared for revenge against the Newcastle Jets after a tough loss in round one.
“Last week we played a game and we were passing the ball around really nicely on the ground and it seems everyone has got their head in the game.”
“I think we-ve got a lot better since the first game [against the Newcastle Jets] that we should have won.”
