Ellie Brush was announced today as Canberra United FC’s recipient of the captain’s arm band for the inaugural season of the Westfield W-League kicking off this weekend against the Newcastle Jets on Sunday in the Hunter.

The fairy tale continues for the local, Brush, after making her debut for the former Canberra Eclipse as the youngest member to dawn what was then the navy and yellow, four years later Brush returns to the Canberra side as the experienced leader this time in green.
Head Coach, Robbie Hooker, said the decision wasn-t a tough one despite having the likes of Australian representatives Caitlin Munoz, Lydia Williams, Thea Slatyer and Rhian Davies in the squad.
“Some other players may not have figured because I don-t want to be putting too much pressure on some of our higher profile players because I want them to actually perform on the park without any added pressure of needing to worry about other people,” Hooker said.
“When I looked at all the players in the squad that were available to do the job, I didn-t consider interstate players for the top job, and the players thats left, it-s important that the selection be someone who-s likely to start every week somewhere in the backline or defensive midfield.
“Ellie by far and away displays the characteristics that I want to see in a captain out of all the players in the squad.”
“She-s mature, sensible, leads by example, committed, good character, she talks a lot, can lead players around the field, and encourages players.”
Hooker believes the captaincy and the Westfield W-League will benefit Brush significantly as the studying physiotherapist continues to chase her dream one day lining up in the green and gold.
“As a football player she-s highly underrated and I see this league as a stepping stone for possible representative selections.
Thea Slatyer has been named vice captain for the first season while rising star Rebecca Kiting has been included in the leadership group which includes both captain and vice captain.
