A Cool, Calm & Collected Nicki Flannery gets Even for Canberra

Canberra United has shared the points with Melbourne Victory in Round 10 of the Westfield W-League, with a 1-1 draw at Epping Stadium.

Canberra got to work early, with an attempt from Grace Maher in the 2nd minute. However it didn’t take long for Melbourne Victory to return serve, with Angela Beard scoring her first goal for the club, after a long ball shot across Canberra’s goalkeeper into the net.

Letting that one slip through her fingers didn’t hamper Keeley Richards though, who put on a great spectacle, with several great saves to follow.

Kendall Fletcher displayed some impressive defence, denying Lisa de Vanna in the 16th minute, before a relentless Jessika Nash was shown a yellow card.

With two minutes of extra time added on in the second half, Canberra did what they do best and delivered in the dying minutes.

A great pass by Bianca Galic to Nicki Flannery, who calmly shot it past their keeper managed to level the score going into half time.

In the next 45 and Keeley Richards was quickly put to work. A one-on-one battle between Lisa De Vanna and the goalkeeper saw Richards rise to the challenge, to keep the score locked.

There were a few more attempts by Michelle Heyman, Bianca Galic and Maher but it wasn’t to be..

Canberra fans thought the job was almost done when Grace Maher and Michelle Heyman made a runner for the goals but it wasn’t to be.

A shift change saw 16 year old Sasha Grove, Paige Satchell and Hayley Taylor-Young brought on to provide some vital energy in the second stanza.

Despite several more attempts from Victory, goalkeeper Keeley refused to give them entry. The final whistle blew with the points shared at 1-1.
