Canberra United’s Round 15 Liberty A-League clash with Western Sydney Wanderers will form part of an A-Leagues wide themed Pride Celebration in support of Pride Cup 2023.

The Pride Cup clash against our near neighbours Western Sydney Wanderers is scheduled to take place at McKellar Park on Saturday 25 February with kick-off at 3pm. Gates will open at 2pm, so make sure you’re there to back your team in green by buying your tickets which are on sale now!

Games between United and the Wanderers have often provided big talking points and wonderful goals, and this one, designated a Pride Round match, is likely to be just as exciting.

Pride Cup began as a powerful gesture of mateship in a country AFL club and has grown into an Australia-wide national movement for change that unites communities. This powerful celebration of diversity is transforming the sporting landscape across the country.

Through rainbow-themed events – the universal symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTI+) pride – clubs are sending a clear message that everyone is welcome in sport. Sporting clubs are the beating heart of local communities, and everyone should be able to participate and benefit from the connection and belonging that comes with being part of a team.

Sadly, research has found that many LGBTI+ Australians feel locked out of the games they love because of discrimination and abuse. Pride Cup addresses these issues by providing hands-on education to foster understanding amongst players, coaches, and officials.

This is then usually followed by a visible display of hope and acceptance to LGBTI+ players on a celebratory ‘Pride Cup’ game day. Pride Cup strengthens clubs, brings communities together and creates ripple effects far beyond the playing field. In 2022, Pride Cups were being held in association with over five hundred community sporting clubs around Australia!

So come along on Saturday 25 February and support United. We are inclusive and proudly so.
