FYL: United look for strong showing in first home outing

The Canberra United Foxtel National Youth League side will be out to make a strong impression on their home crowd as they take on the Mariners in their first home match of the season.

Despite going down 6-3 to Newcastle last Sunday, the performance was the best yet from the young side who were the better team on the park for large parts of the match. Joshua Gulevski scored United’s first NYL goal as he got on the scoresheet in the first half, while Daniel Fabrizio and Mikey Katsoulis netted in the second stanza to clean up the score line.

Ahead of Saturday’s home matchup, Head Coach Ryan Grogan said that the performance against the Jets was easily the strongest performance so far.

“The result itself was a bit of a disappointment considering I thought we dominated the game from start to finish,” Grogan said.

“When you create 18 clear goal scoring opportunities, and don’t convert, that’s not good.

“With all the pressure we put on in the first half, and in the second half it came down to a 10-minute period in the first half where we got hurt.”

A couple of changes are in store this weekend after two losses to start the season, with Lachlan Griffiths missing out after taking a knee to the head last weekend.

Griffiths’ absence will be a blow to the side with Grogan admitting he thought Griffiths was best on last weekend. But the coach believes that his sides performances are only going to improve.

“If their performances continue in this vein, and continue to improve at the rate they are, we are going to be more than competitive moving forward through this season,” he said.
