Hat Trick for Sykes as Striker Sweeps Awards

Ashleigh Sykes wins three of the four trophies at the CUFC Awards evening.

Striker Ashleigh Sykes was the biggest winner at the 2015/16 Canberra United Westfield W-League Awards function winning three of the four major trophies on offer at the presentation evening held at The Tradies in Dickson.

Sykes claimed the Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Supporters Player of the Year with an unprecedented hat-trick of wins in the majority categories. Emma Checker and Julia De Angelis shared the Rising Star Award for the best under-20 player at the club.

For Sykes the collection of the awards marked the culmination of a tremendous season in which she netted a personal best of seven goals and was a constant menace to opposition defences with her speed and accurate shooting. She becomes the first player to retain the Player of the Year award having won the crown last season and also becomes the first player to win all four of the club awards in her career having been crowned Rising Star in Season 1.

There was nothing to separate the Rising Star Award winners in Season 8 as Checker and De Angelis shared the gong. Both enjoyed immense seasons with Checker a stand-out in the heart of the defence before suffering a season ending knee-injury in Perth. De Angelis meanwhile grew in stature on the field and ended the season with three assists to her name as well as clocking up eleven appearances.

The other award presented on the evening went to the Volunteer of the Year and was jointly won by Christine Moffitt and Lisa Garner. The duo were outstanding at all six home games and were always available for additional work helping provide the most efficient ticketing service in Australia.
