Canberra United can today announce that Westfield W-League legend and former Westfield Matilda Leena Khamis has decided to #GoGreen and join the club in 2019/20.

Khamis brings a wealth of experience to Heather Garriock’s squad, having been a part of the Westfield W-League since its inauguration and notching over 100 appearances across stints with both Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers.

Her 40 goals in the Westfield W-League sees her sit seventh on the all-time goal-scoring list.

Khamis has also worn the green and gold of Australia on 25 occasions, making her Westfield Matildas debut in 2008 before going on to represent her country at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany.

Now preparing for another season in the competition, Khamis says she is looking forward to wearing the green of Canberra United.

“This will be my 12th season in the Westfield W-League, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to play with a new team in a new environment,” Khamis said.

The veteran striker will also reunite with sister and current Canberra United goalkeeper Sham Khamis, after the pair spent several seasons together at Sydney FC.

“I love playing alongside Sham, it will be a special moment for our family seeing us reunite again,” Khamis said.

“We’ve played with each other for many years and we really push each other in training. She definitely tries extra hard when I attempt to score against her and I definitely make it known when she lets one in.”

Canberra United Head Coach Heather Garriock says Khamis will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the group.

“I cannot speak highly enough of Leena as a player and a person,” Garriock said.

“She will bring a great amount of experience, drive and accountability to the squad and I’m so pleased she will be in green this season alongside sister Sham.”

If you want to #GoGreen with Leena, Season 12 memberships are now on sale to the public on the Canberra United website. Be sure to sign up in time for our Round One clash with Perth Glory at McKellar Park on Sunday, 17th November.
