Highly credentialed New Zealand international defender Elizabeth Anton has swapped West for East as she makes the move across country to join Canberra United for the new A-League season.
Anton, who has played in over sixty matches in the pre-eminent women’s football competition in the country, brings a wealth of experience of both domestic and international football to the club, having been capped eighteen times at senior international level by the Football Ferns.
Coming through the New Zealand international youth ranks, Anton was a member of the New Zealand U17 side at the 2014 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica, the 2016 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Papua New Guinea, and again at the 2018 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in France.
“We welcome Elizabeth to Canberra, and I am looking forward to working with her during the season,” Head Coach Antoni Jagarinec commented. “She brings a wealth of experience with her and will be a big addition to the squad.
“Elizabeth brings a presence to the position of central defence and has the streetwise nous that comes with having competed at the top-level for a long time. I am sure she will be a popular player amongst our fanbase.”
Anton, a commanding presence in the centre of defence, went on to make her senior international debut as a substitute in a 5-0 win over Thailand on 28 November 2017, and was named as the winner of Perth’s ‘Most Glorious Player Award’ winer in her debut season in Western Australia.
Ironically, Anton’s first ever A-League goal came in a match against Canberra United in January 2021, a year in which she went to the Olympics in Tokyo with her national team, subsequently being part of the 2023 FIFA World Cup Squad.
“I am excited to be coming to Canberra to join a club with such a proud and illustrious history,” Anton commented.
“The team is well-known throughout the competition for being a place where they play attractive football, have a passionate fanbase, and really get behind the team and I am looking forward to experiencing that in green.
“I have fond memories of Canberra throughout my playing career and am looking forward to creating more at the club.”
Anton has committed to Canberra United for the 2024/25 season, and you can too! Packages for season memberships are available now on our club website at www.canberraunited.com.au.
