Canberra United Head Coach Njegosh Popovich has named his support staff for the 2022/2023 Liberty A-League season with the return of some familiar names to the green of the two-times Champions.
Twin sisters Nicole and Ashleigh Sykes are no strangers to Canberra United, having been a part of the inaugural United line-up back in 2008 and featuring in the 2012 and 2015 Grand Final victories.
Indeed, Sykes has netted three Grand Final goals for United, once against Brisbane Roar and two in the win over Perth Glory, whilst Begg was a former captain of the club.
Local coach Antoni Jagarinec is named as Popovich’s assistant, with the former Belconnen United Head Coach having overseen almost a decade of Blue Devils dominance in the Capital Football Women’s National Premier League (NPL).
Jagarinec has a wealth of coaching experience in the Women’s game, moving across to the men’s NPL program with Tigers FC, having won everything there was to win in the women’s game, including multiple league and cup titles.
“I am delighted to be able to name such a strong backroom staff and I am thoroughly looking forward to working with them all as we strive to return the club back to the top of the Liberty A-League,” Popovich said of the appointments.
The qualities of all the coaching staff are well known and, importantly, they all understand Canberra United, and the culture of this environment.
“We are also working towards bringing in more ex-players that contributed to the past success of Canberra United, as support and mentors to the current group, as we build towards the start of the new campaign.”
United have also named their medical staff for 2022/2023 with Doctor Wilson Lo and physiotherapist Julian Russell-Jones both heavily invested in the Canberra Sporting scene and well known to the Canberra sporting community.
