Roestbakken ready for must win match against Newcastle

Canberra United co-captain Karly Roestbakken admits the last-minute loss to Melbourne City “got to us a bit”, but she is adamant the club has put the heartbreak behind them and are fully focused ahead of their match against the Newcastle Jets.

An Emily van Egmond penalty in stoppage time helped City snatch all three points during their round two clash at McKellar Park last Sunday, shattering United hearts.

While most teams would drop their heads, Roestbakken said the team turned their disappointment into belief.

“The loss to Melbourne City got to us a bit,” she said. “But obviously Melbourne City is a good team and we put a great performance together against them.

“That gives us confidence going into the weekend because we matched it with them. “

Up next for Canberra United is an away trip to Newcastle to face the Jets, who are looking to bounce back from their 1-0 loss to the Western Sydney Wanderers last weekend.

Though the Jets are still searching for their first win of the campaign, Roestbakken said United are not taking the Jets lightly.

“The Jets have played Wanderers and City and both were even games,” she said. “We cannot underestimate the team by looking at their squad on paper.

“We can’t go in there thinking that we are going to win easily. Any team that we play in this league is good competition, so we are ready for a fight.”

Despite having a strong winning record against the Jets, United have lost their past two clashes between the sides, including a 1-0 loss in the corresponding fixture last season.

“We know that Newcastle are going to put a strong performance together,” Roestbakken said.

“We are going to play extra hard, we are going to fight for each other and we are going to fight for the team because we really need to get the win this week.”
