Sasha Grove Elevated to Playing Squad

Canberra United is thrilled to announce that Sasha Grove has been elevated to the playing squad, signing on for her second season in green.

The 17-year-old was named in six games last season, before returning to the Canberra United Academy in the Capital Football NPLW.

The midfielder returned to United as a scholarship player this season, making her 2021/22 debut in the 74th minute of Canberra’s Round 7 match against Sydney FC.

“This truly means a lot and I’m very humbled by it,” Sasha said.

“Growing up in a footballing family, it’s really rewarding to see my efforts, as a result of my family’s support, come to fruition and to be able to play alongside such an inspiring and empowering bunch of girls is just phenomenal.

“I just want to help the team in every way I can and gain a better sense of who I am as a player and a person. We have an awesome team culture here and not a day goes by that I feel that someone’s not got my back.

“So I think it’s really important that I try my best to give back to the team and work for them.

“I love being able to come into training and just get to work. People like Allira, Keeley, and Grace, who are so experienced and so patient, have helped me so much, but truly everyone has been a pleasure to work with. We’ve also got the most supportive and helpful coaches and staff, and for that I’m truly grateful.”

Head Coach Vicki Linton said it’s due reward for her efforts.

“I am really pleased to have Sasha as part of the squad and she has earned this elevation to a full contract,” Coach Linton said.

“I have had the pleasure to work with her in the Canberra United Academy program and I have enjoyed seeing her development over the last year.

She is an intelligent, purposeful and thoughtful person who not only makes the most of the opportunity she has had in training with more experienced players but genuinely adds to the group in many ways. I look forward to seeing what she can do in the remaining weeks of the season.”

Canberra United is back at home this weekend, taking on Perth Glory on Saturday, February 5. Buy your tickets, here.
