United look for two in a row in Newcastle

Canberra United and Heather Garriock will be looking to make it two wins in a row when they travel to face Newcastle Jets this weekend in Round 4 of the Westfield W-League.

A thrilling 3-2 win over Sydney FC last Sunday at McKellar Park showed glimpses of what Garriock’s squad can do, but despite a win under her belt the first-year Head Coach knows that there is still more to come from the squad.

“Improvement is the key this week, we devised a game plan and didn’t execute that, particularly in the first half against Sydney,” she said.

“While we got the win and it’s great to have that feeling, we weren’t really satisfied.”

“In terms of executing the game plan, I’m confident the girls can do that this week.”

Garriock will take a squad to Newcastle similar to that which faced Sydney, with a couple of changes. Bethany Gordon and Maddy Whittal are outs for this weekend, while Nicky Flannery makes a return from injury and Aoife Colvill is back in having missed the home clash last weekend.

Flannery has missed the opening matches of the season with stress fractures in her foot, but will provide a spark coming into the match if she begins on the bench as expected.

Munoz’s experience and midfield expertise will be important against a Jets side that is still very dangerous despite last weekend’s loss, having picked up wins in Round 1 and 2.

Michelle Heyman and Ellie Carpenter will be looking to continue their big impact before United lose them to national team duties for the Round 5 home clash with Perth, but if last weekend is anything to go by they will have to trouble leaving their stamp on the match.
