Westfield W-League Round Three at McDonald Jones Stadium, thanks to JT Sports Tours.
Quick Look |
Canberra United head on their first away day thanks to JT Sports Tours this weekend, taking on Newcastle at McDonald Jones Stadium in round three of the Westfield W-League.
United arrive in Newcastle on top of the table but likely still ruing a 4-4 draw with Perth that should have been a win and will want to keep the undefeated run going here.
The Jets had a bye in week one before going down to the Victory in their only game so far and will be trying to find their first points of the season in this outing.
Key Bits |
These teams have met 16 times since the start of the league, with United winning 12, the Jets winning twice and two occasions where the teams could not be separated.
The ledger was split evenly last season as United won early on in Newcastle, and the Jets returned the favour with a big victory at McKellar Park at the back end of the season.
Both teams had players feature for their national teams over the break, and Ellie Carpenter and Maria Rojas will be back in the same colours this weekend after facing off from opposite sides as the Westfield Matildas took on Chile twice over the break.
Rachel Corsie’s Scotland lost by a goal to the USA as she was named Player of the Match, and she returns for this meeting to play a big role, up against the Jets’ Katie Stengel.
Nikola Orgill and Tash Prior could face their former side for the first time since moving to the capital over the off-season and will be raring to make an impact.
United will be without Refiloe Jane as she gets set to begin the AFCON campaign with the Banyana Banyana on Monday morning, but American forward Paige Nielsen could be in line to make her first appearance in Green after linking up with the side recently.
From the Coach |
On the Jets…
“I think their strength is in their width. With Gema Simon and Taylor Smith out wide, Emily Van Egmond holding the fort in midfield they are very strong. We need to nullify them in those areas and we’ve had a really good week of training leading into the game to work on that.”
On the Perth game…
“We’ve absolute addressed that game. If you sweep it under the carpet, then it’s going to happen again. We’ve spoken about it and learnt from it, everyone was very open and honest with each other, players and staff, so we’ll make sure it never happens again.”
On the upcoming schedule…
“The next two weeks are huge for us. Three points is important especially in Newcastle on our first away game. Obviously we need to fit a recovery and tactical session in between those games. We’ll wait and see how Adelaide play this weekend and then have a video session heading into that game as well.”
