Canberra United can today confirm that former Westfield W-League Head Coach Ray Junna will take the helm of the club’s Foxtel Y-League side as Head Coach for the 2019/20 season.
An A-Licence accredited coach, Junna has extensive experience at the top level and was most recently in charge of the NYL team and youth setup at the Central Coast Mariners.
Junna coached Canberra United’s Westfield W-League team through the 2009 season where they reached the semi-finals, and said he is looking forward to the challenge of taking United’s NYL team into their third season.
“I am thrilled by the opportunity to return to a club of Canberra United’s stature, and to be given the chance to lead some of the best young players in the region,” Junna said.
“It is clear there is talent here, as seen from how far some Canberra juniors have gone, so to be able to work with those players in the Foxtel Y-League and prepare them to play some of the best young players at other clubs is an exciting challenge.”
In his role, Junna will also oversee the Canberra United NYL winter training program, Talent Support Program for players in the NPLY and assist with Coach Education courses and assessment.
Capital Football CEO Phil Brown backed Junna’s appointment and welcomed him back to the club.
“We are excited at Canberra United to be welcoming Ray back to the club where he has coached our Westfield W-League side in previous years,” Brown said.
“It is clear that there is a strong talent base in Canberra, and we believe that Ray can get the best out of these players and we are all looking forward to seeing his team in action over Summer.”
