Match Preview – Sydney FC vs Canberra United

Canberra vs Sydney 2017

It will be a top of the table clash when Canberra United takes on Sydney FC at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Monday afternoon.

Neither side has lost this season so giving up that clean record will a hard pill to swallow for either team.

This will be the first time the two have met this Westfield W-League season, after COVID-19 restrictions had limited Sydney FC to only playing games in New South Wales.

Sydney has beaten the Newcastle Jets and Western Sydney Wanderers twice each this season, and beat Melbourne City 2-0 on Thursday night, conceding only one goal across their five matches.

Remy Siemsen scored her second goal in as many games on Thursday night, placing the ball neatly into the bottom right corner in the 51st minute, before Natalie Tobin took advantage of a weak defensive line to head the ball from close range and get the job done for Sydney FC.

Canberra United is coming off a comprehensive win over the Western Sydney Wanderers, with Michelle Heyman edging closer to reclaiming the league’s top scoring record from Sam Kerr, following two goals in the first half last week.

Goalkeeper Keeley Richards made her Westfield W-League debut in style and managed a clean sheet, most likely earning her a second shot in goals in Round 7.

In one memorable matchup between United and the Sky Blues, Michelle Heyman bagged a game-winning brace at McKellar Park in 2017, to claim a come from behind win. Trailing 1-2 in the 70th minute to a pair of Kylie Ledbrook penalties, the home side rallied late and found an equaliser through defender Toni Pressley.

Heyman – who had opened the scoring in the first half – then fired in an 85th minute winner to complete a stunning fightback in Ashleigh Sykes’ 100th Westfield W-League appearance.

If Heyman manages another brace at Jubilee on Monday, it will be 71 goals and straight to the top of the goal scoring ladder!
