CANBERRA UNITED TRIAL MATCH SHOWS NPL QUALITY

Some of the stars of the Capital Football National Premier League went head-to-head at McKellar Park on Wednesday evening as Canberra United Head Coach Antoni Jagarinec ran the rule over the talent available in the region ahead of the new 2024/25 A-League season.

The NPLW has been in rich form during the 2024 campaign, and it was no surprise to see plenty of representation from the table-toppers Canberra Olympic and Belconnen United with the former providing five players to the trial, and the latter a further nine.

With nine players from Gungahlin United and four from Canberra Croatia, the top four clubs in the area were much in evidence. Outside of these clubs, there were also players put forward from West Canberra Wanderers and O’Connor Knights, providing a feast for the local football connoisseur.

Led by respective coaches Ahmed Ugool and Matt Moore, the players went through a rigorous pre-match warm-up and skills session before taking to the field for an entertaining, and competitive, ninety minutes that was well-received by an appreciative crowd that braved the freezing conditions.

Clinically taken goals from Ginger Oliver, with a well-timed run and lob, and Keira Bobbin, finishing in typical style to those familiar with her NPLW goal prowess, gave Team Green a 2-0 lead before a deflected hit from Hattie Cram reduced the arrears to make the final score 2-1.

The result wasn’t the point though, as this talented group of players gave onlooking Canberra United Head Coach Antoni Jagarinec much to think about as he continues to build his squad ahead of the 2024/25 A-League season.
