Canberra United has welcomed a number of new faces to the squad, as pre-season kicked off this week. Unlike many of her other team mates, new signing Allira Toby travelled down from Queensland, so didn’t have to quarantine on arrival into the ACT. “Yeah I was lucky, I’ve actually been able to play football all year up in Brisbane,” she said. “I flew down on Thursday and was ready to go so it’s been great. “I think I’ve made the right choice, it’s the environment I want, I think I’ll be able to thrive and push myself under Vicki and with this team.”
Canberra United is delighted to announce the signing of former Canberra United Academy players, Alexia Karrys-Stahl and Mikayla Vidmar for the upcoming A-League Women’s season. Mikayla Vidmar has football in the blood. The daughter of former Socceroo legend Tony Vidmar, Mikayla joined Woden Valley SC when she was 12, before being selected into the Canberra United Academy Program. Mikayla has been playing for Adelaide City for two years now and was part of their 2019 Premiership winning team.
Canberra United is pleased to announce the signing of goalkeeper Beth Mason-Jones for the upcoming A-League Women’s (ALW) season. Beth joins Canberra with three years of experience in the ALW, playing for Melbourne Victory from 2016-2019. After taking 15 months away from the game for personal reasons, Beth signed with Victorian NPLW club Alamein United FC in early 2021. Beth said she can’t wait to get stuck into the Canberra United preseason from October 25.
Canberra United is pleased to announce the signing of Chloe Middleton for the upcoming season. Chloe joins Canberra from the Western Sydney Wanderers, where she played and started in five matches during the 2020/21 season. The midfielder said she’s excited to join Canberra United and be part of the positive culture of the club. “Joining Canberra is a great opportunity for me to grow as a footballer and continue to be challenged every day,” Chloe said.
Australian football has revealed its new identity, with the men’s, women’s and youth leagues brought together under a unified “A-Leagues” banner. Recasting the men’s and women’s elite competitions as partners at the top of the game, the A-Leagues will use football’s position as the country’s most inclusive sport to grow the game for everyone.
Canberra United is thrilled to announce that Margot Robinne and Holly Caspers have signed with the club for the upcoming season. Margot Robinne is an experienced midfielder, who made her debut in the French National League at 15 years old. She played 210 games for Montigny le Bretonneux, FC Rouen and Toulouse FC, where she scored 138 goals. In 2017, she moved to Australia to play in the Victorian NPLW, before signing a W-League contract with Melbourne City in 2020/21.
Canberra has a proud history in women’s football and it all began in 1978. Canberra’s first female football club, the ANU Women’s Soccer Club, was brewed over a few quiet beers at the pub between pioneers of the game; Heather Reid, Clare McGrath, Steph Quinn, June Andersen, Andrea Hotchkiss and Cass Hampton. Heather Reid went on to become the first female CEO of Capital Football, playing an instrumental role in Canberra United’s creation.
Canberra United is set to begin their 2021/22 campaign at home, with the APL today announcing the opening fixtures for the upcoming season. The W-League season will kick off on Friday December 3, with Canberra United scheduled to host Melbourne City FC at Viking Park from 7.45pm, before travelling to South Australia to take on Adelaide United in Round 2. Canberra will be back at home for Round 4, hosting Brisbane Roar on Thursday, December 23.
Another home-grown star has re-signed with Canberra United for the upcoming W-League season, with Lauren Keir putting pen to paper. The 24-year-old made a huge impact in Canberra’s run to finals last season, playing 90 minutes of every match to notch up 1,170 minutes of W-League football in 2020/21. “Since her debut in 2018, the defender has shown reliability at the back but also made two great goal assists in Season 13 of the W-League, which led to game winning goals.”
