Finals spot up for grabs as United host Jets

Canberra United will face the Newcastle Jets at McKellar Park knowing that a win will seal another top four spot and Westfield W-League finals berth.

Three points will put United above both the Jets and Melbourne City, with those two sides set to face off in the final weekend of the season, meaning both could not overtake United.

Last weekend’s draw with Perth provided a result that wasn’t perfect, but still gave United a valuable point while all but doing way with one of their rivals for the top four.

The match was a continuation of goalscoring form for the side this month but Heather Garriock will be hoping for a better defensive showing on a flat pitch this weekend at home.

“Obviously we know that this match is an important one and we have the chance to grab a finals spot,” she said.

“But we approach it like other games, we want to stop them scoring and make sure we convert any chances we have.”

The two sides met earlier this season in Newcastle, with United coming back from a goal down to rescue a crucial 2-1 win.

A number of players on both sides will be facing former teammates, meaning that a bit of extra spice could be added to what will already be an important fixture for both clubs.

Liana Danaskos will face her old side once more, this time in Green, while Hannah Brewer will turn out for the Jets at McKellar Park.

The Jets will be desperate for the three points as well ahead of a big clash with Melbourne City in the final round, and a loss here would essentially turn that match into a sudden death clash.
