PREVIEW: DEFENDING PREMIERS NEXT TEST FOR UNITED

Canberra United are back at home for their toughest test of the season against an undefeated Melbourne City.

City travel to Canberra for Saturday’s Round 8 matchup to play what will only be their fourth match of the season. City started the season with a 2-2 draw against Sydney FC and a dominant 4-0 win over reigning champions Central Coast Mariners.

City then had almost a month away from the league to participate in the AFC Women’s Champions League, winning all three of their matches by a combined score of 15-0. The results meant City topped their group and progressed to the quarter finals of the competition which will be held in March.

The defending premiers returned to league action last week with a win over a travelling Wellington Phoenix side, but had to wait until the 86th minute to score the only goal of the match – a Rebekah Stott header from a well-worked free kick routine.

City have scored in all three A-League matches this season and have not conceded in any competition since their opening match against Sydney FC.

After United’s dominant win over Sydney midweek, City are the only team in the competition that is yet to taste defeat.

For Canberra United, a win would see them hold their spot on top of the table after seven matches, with the potential to do the same with a draw if other results go their way.

United have been firing on all cylinders recently, with Michelle Heyman leading the League’s goal contribution rankings – three goals and two assists. Bethany Gordan ranks equal first in assists with three, and goalkeeper Sally James leads the league in shots saved with 21.

The team have recovered well after a quick turn around of only two days between matches and are hoping to extend their winning streak to four in a row.

The match kicks off at 5:30pm at McKellar Park, Saturday December 13.
