PREVIEW: LADY REDS PROVIDE THIRD TEST FOR UNITED

Canberra United return to McKellar Park for Round Three of the 2024/25 Ninja A-League Women’s season, playing host to fifth placed Adelaide United seeking to keep alive their winning streak at the start of the new season.

This is the 28th time the two sides have met, and previous results heavily the team in green with sixteen wins on the board, however previous form usually counts for very little as we have already seen in an absorbing start to the campaign.

Current season form sees Canberra with two wins from two, having downed Brisbane Roar in Round 1 and recorded a first-ever win in New Zealand with the narrow success over the Wellington Phoenix last time out, and a chance to win the first three games of a season since 2013, whilst Adelaide has one win and a loss to their name.

Adelaide’s attack has started strongly having netted four goals so far, the same amount as Canberra, and come into this game full of confidence, with the return of Fiona Worts a massive bonus, the English striker scoring three times already.

Up the other end of the park, and the attacking power of Canberra has been firing at the commencement of the new season. The nascent attacking duo of Michelle Heyman, who netted the winner in Wellington, and Maja Markovski, two on debut versus Roar, proving to be deadly, with three goals between them.

Canberra’s defence has been in great form to start as well. Goalkeeper Sally James has been a standout performer in the first two games and, along with her belligerent and resolute back-four, has withstood a barrage of attacks from both Brisbane and Wellington respectively.

Fans usually expect plenty of goals when the two United’s clash, with the last two encounters ending in a four-all drawn and a 3-1 win to Canberra. In fact, there has been a total of 100 goals scored all-time in this fixture.

Speaking of 100 goals, legendary striker Heyman scored her 100th Canberra United goal in Round Two, and coincidentally, also scored her 100th A-League goal against Adelaide last season in Unite Round. In current form, the Matildas superstar may well be in the mood to inflict more damage on her former club.
