Canberra United fell to a frustrating 2–1 defeat against Brisbane Roar on Saturday evening, bringing the regular season to a close in front of a strong McKellar Park crowd.
A total of 1,934 supporters packed into the venue – our biggest home crowd of the season – and created an outstanding atmosphere. The club would like to sincerely thank every fan who came out to support the team.
United started brightly and controlled large periods of the contest, but it was Brisbane who struck first, taking their chance to lead at the break despite limited opportunities.
The second half saw Canberra respond with intent, and it was Michelle Heyman who brought the home side back on level terms with a composed finish, continuing her impressive form in front of goal.
With momentum on their side, United pushed for a winner, but Brisbane regained the lead against the run of play, forcing Canberra to chase the game in the closing stages.
After creating a number of chances throughout the match, United were given another opportunity to equalise deep into stoppage time from the penalty spot. It wasn’t to be, with the visitors holding on, leaving the home side to reflect on what might have been.
Saturday night also marked the final A-League Women match for local referee Delfina Shakespear, a proud Canberran who officiated over 100 matches and has contributed to the game for more than a decade. The club congratulates Delfina on an outstanding career and thanks her for her contribution to the game in Canberra and nationally.
The result sees Brisbane Roar secure fourth place on the ladder, while Canberra United finish the regular season in third – the club’s highest finish to the regular season since the 2016/17 campaign under Rae Dower.
While the outcome on the night was not what the team deserved, there is plenty to take forward as attention now turns to finals football.
