Canberra United will be chasing both their maiden victory of the season and some consistency when they travel to west this weekend for Round Three of the Westfield W-League against Perth Glory.
With two losses from as many games this season, Canberra midfielder Grace Gill believes that a bit more consistency in their play will turn the results around, starting this weekend in Perth at Clipsal Stadium.
“We-ve showed how we can play and we-re playing really well in patches so if we can aim for a bit more consistency then we-ll be able to play well against Perth this weekend,” Gill said.
“Things on the field are going a little bit patchy at the moment.
“We play well in parts and we look really good when we play how we-ve been training to play.
“We look good in possession and have created plenty of opportunities for us to score.
“We are missing some experience but having said that the young girls have really stepped up and I think we can get a few points on the board this weekend.”
With an opening round loss to the Brisbane Roar and a narrow loss to Sydney on the weekend, both defeats have come against the strongest teams in the league according to Gill.
“It-s been a disappointing start but that said we-ve had a couple pretty tough games first up and I think they will be the toughest competition we face,” Gill said.
“We would really like to get some points on the board, it-s a bit of a rough blow to be without victory but as I-ve said we-ve created plenty of opportunities and we just need to learn to capitalise on those and get a few goals.”
Despite the rip age of 20 years old, this season has seen Gill step up into a senior leadership role within the team as they looking to guide the very young side through to another grand final appearance.
“It-s a bit daunting that at 20 years old I-m considered a senior member of the team but we need to step up and try to lead the younger girls and provide a bit of guidance about how they play,” Gill said.
“I look at it as more of a challenge so it-s good for me as well because it-s a learning experience.
One thing is for certain, Canberra United see the tough mission to Perth as their opportunity to find some consistency, confidence in front of goal and their first win of the season.
“It-s going to be a long trip and a pretty quick turnaround but it should be good and I think we can get a few goals this weekend and a win,” Gill said.
