Local sports journalist Merryn Sherwood was honoured with a special commendation for coverage of Women-s Sport at the Australian Sports Commission awards recently.
Sherwood, who is a dedicated follower of Canberra United, won the commendation for her coverage in the Canberra Times of United-s maiden season in the inaugural Westfield W-League, a year in which they reached the Grand Final, only to lose 0-2 to Queensland Roar.
The collection of articles presented to the ASC for the awards nomination showcased the incredible amount of time and effort that Merryn has put in covering the club and bringing the stories of the players to the mainstream media.
Merryn-s excellent work has significantly increased coverage of the women-s game in the media and has helped make the team one of Canberra-s best-loved institutions in its relatively short life-span.
“I-m happy to get the commendation as it-s another boost for women-s sport and, in particular, Canberra United” Sherwood said.
“I think it-s an award for the club, the support staff and the players more so than me! If the club hadn-t performed as well as they did, then I wouldn-t have been able to do nearly as much, so thank you all!”
