Statement win for United over Wanderers

Canberra United have won their third game in a row with a dominant three-goal win over the Western Sydney Wanderers. Two first half goals from Michelle Heyman and a first ever Canberra United goal from Sasha Grove were the highlights as United continued their push towards the top four.

As has been the case on multiple occasions this season, Canberra came out the blocks firing with their early pressure leading to Michelle Heyman scoring her 90th goal in the A-Leagues Women.

Picking up a loose ball in the midfield, Vesna Milivojevic squeezed a pass to Heyman, with the strike slotting the ball home into the bottom corner, continuing her fine scoring form.

Wanderers though that they had equalised through Sheridan Gallagher off a corner, only for the referee to disallow with Canberra’s one-goal lead still intact.

A quick drinks break had Canberra refreshed, and Heyman would capitalise again on some brillian attacking pressure. Dispossessing the defender, Heyman burst forward and snuck the ball home past Jordyn Bloomer in the Wanderers goal.

Despite the scoreline, Wanderers had plenty of attacking momentum. After receiving the ball in the box, Olivia Price cut back and went for goal but was denied by a stunning save from the young shot-stopper Chloe Lincoln.

It was another quick start for Canberra in the second half as Heyman and Milivojevic both threatened early. The pressure paid off as a brilliant attacking move ended with Sasha Grove scoring her first goal in green.

Nickoletta Flannery got on the end of a wonderful through ball and laid a pinpoint pass to Grove, who smashed the ball home to give Canberra a three-goal lead.

The attacking dominance of Canberra was on display for much of the second half with Flannery and Grove constant threats down the flanks.

Even though the did not score another goal despite their dominance, Canberra comfortably saw out the game and would run out three-goal winners over the Western Sydney Wanderers.
