Canberra United have reinforced the defensive stocks ahead of the Christmas period with the signing of American defender Sarah Clark from North Carolina Courage in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
The defender has arrived in the National Capital this week and is a potential for selection for the team’s trip to Melbourne to face the Victory this weekend in Round 9 of the Liberty A-League.
“We are delighted to be able to secure Sarah for the remainder of the season,” Head Coach Njegosh Popovich commented on the latest addition to the Canberra United squad.
“Sarah is a solid defender, is speedy across the ground, possesses excellent positional sense, and is strong in the tackle. Her distribution is also top notch, and I have no doubt that she will settle into our culture and environment very quickly.”
Clark joined North Carolina Courage last season and made a brace of appearances in the Challenge Cup, assisting a goal on her debut, a 5-0 hammering of Orlando Pride.
Clark’s emergence in the Courage squad followed a productive College career with the Purdue Boilermakers and the Virginia Cavaliers, appearing in thirty-six matches for the former, earning All-Big Ten Freshman Team Honours, and latterly featuring sixty-one times for the Cavaliers.
At the Cavaliers she was part of the defensive unit that kept thirteen clean sheets in 2021, and only conceded seventeen goals in twenty-three games a year later.
“I am excited by the opportunity to further my career by signing for Canberra United,” Clark said of putting pen to paper for the two-times Liberty A-League Grand Final winners.
“The prospect of playing in Australia was one that I was keen to explore, and I am thankful for Njegosh and the club for giving me the chance to do so. I have read a lot about the club and am excited to get started.”
Sarah Clark is onboard for Canberra United’s push to the finals, and you can be too! Memberships for the remainder of the Liberty A-League campaign are on sale now and you can purchase yours from 2023/24 Memberships – Canberra United.
