Westfield W-League Round Two at McKellar Park, presented by Lennock Hyundai.

Quick Look |

After an important win to begin the season against reigning champions Melbourne City, Canberra United will be looking to continue a strong start as Perth Glory visit McKellar Park on Sunday. Perth are coming off a draw with Brisbane in their first outing when they were sans Sam Kerr, and Carson Pickett’s late strike robbed them of the full three points. Both sides will want to pick up momentum heading into the international break.

Key Bits |

Perth will need to buck the trend of a horror record against Canberra United, having won only once in 17 meetings between the two sides since the Westfield W-League began. Just two seasons ago they were thumped 7-2 thanks to four from Ash Sykes and were on the end of three screamers last season in a 3-2 defeat. This match will not just be a physical test, but a mental one too.

Sam Kerr returns for Perth this week and will no doubt look to be a thorn in the side of the Canberra United backline. Kerr remains one of the best forwards in the world and will be keen to get on the board as she returns from a carry-over suspension.

Not only did Heather Garriock’s international contingent make their mark last week, a number of youngsters also put their best foot forward. In her first ever Westfield W-League start Laura Hughes did an excellent job of helping the midfield tick over and will be important again this weekend.

Likewise, Nicki Flannery had an excellent game down the flank, with her pace and delivery contributing to several chances and she will look to wear down Perth’s fullbacks in this outing.

Karly Roestbakken and Aoife Colvill both return to the mix after strong stints away with the Young Matildas, and Roestbakken particularly stands ready to make an impact after she became a big part of Garriock’s team in season 10.

From the Coach |

On the start to the season…

Getting three points in the first round against City is a good start, but it’s also just the beginning. Generally, this year the Westfield W-League will be a big test, there are so many good internationals who have come over and all the teams are looking pretty good.

On Perth Glory…

Sam will be hungry having not played last week, so that adds some hunger to Perth glory. I know Sam Kerr pretty well and what her strengths are, so we’ve done our homework and to contain her will be the most important thing for us. It’s great, we need to problem solve how we can overcome not just someone like her, but the whole Perth Glory side as well.

On the return of Karly Roestbakken & Aoife Colvill…

Karly and Aoife are back, and both were very successful over there at the tournament. To bring back two players like that is brilliant, having both of them back only strengthens the squad and increases the competition.
